Investigador principal del Grupo "Apoptosis, Inmunidad y Cáncer" de la Universidad de Zaragoza desde 2014, grupo que se creó en 1995, justo después de mi regreso de mis dos estancias postdoctorales en el extranjero. Este grupo está reconocido como Grupo de Excelencia en Investigación por el Gobierno de Aragón desde 2005 y esta categoría se ha renovado en 2019. Dentro del grupo, he liderado temas relacionados por un lado con los mecanismos efectores del sistema inmunológico que ejercen los linfocitos T citotóxicos (CTL) y las células NK y por otro con la regulación de la respuesta inmune, necesaria para prevenir enfermedades autoinmunes. Ambas líneas de investigación pueden tener aplicación en la mejora de la inmunoterapia contra el cáncer. Como aplicación de esos estudios básicos, se han generado en el grupo liposomas decorados con el ligando mortal TRAIL (LUV-TRAIL) y varias inmunotoxinas basadas en la granulisina, tecnologías que se han patentado, y una de las patentes, relativa a la inmunotoxina basada en la granulisina y dirigida contra el antígeno tumoral CEA, ha sido adquirida por la empresa biotecnológica española Peaches Bioetch en 2020. He realizado numerosas colaboraciones científicas y dirigido proyectos de investigación del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación/Economía y Competitividad, del Gobierno de Aragón, de la Comunidad de Trabajo de los Pirineos y también he sido coordinador del Proyecto CliNK, financiado por el programa Sudoe de la Unión Europea (2011-2013). He sido fundador de la Red Española de Apoptosis (Apored) en 1997 y del Grupo Español de Inmunoterapia (GEIT), dentro de la Sociedad Española de Inmunología, en 2013. Mi actividad investigadora se combina con mi actividad docente en la Universidad de Zaragoza desde 1995, habiendo dirigido en este momento 18 tesis doctorales, más otras 2 que están en curso, siendo 7 de ellas Premio Extraordinario de Doctorado. Además, he sido Coordinador del Grado en Biotecnología de la Universidad de Zaragoza de 2010 a 2015 y director del Departamento al que pertenezco desde 2015 a 2023. Actualmente, soy coordinador del Máster en Inmunología Tumoral e Inmunoterapia del Cáncer, iniciado en el curso 2022/23. Tengo un índice H de 43 según Web of Science y de 52 según Google Scholar, siendo el décimo autor más citado de mi institución de entre más de 3000 científicos de todos los campos.
